Floating in the Skypool at Hubertus while gazing out over the Dolomites, you feel it immediately: this is where letting go begins. But warm water is much more than just relaxation – it’s an ancient remedy. Even the Romans understood its beneficial effects on body and mind.

At a temperature of around 33 degrees Celsius, the Skypool gently stimulates circulation, relaxes the muscles, and calms the mind. For a deeper sense of well-being, immerse yourself in the whirlpools of Heaven & Hell, where around 36 degrees Celsius and gentle massage jets provide profound relaxation.

Scientifically proven: warm water boosts blood circulation, eases muscle tension, improves sleep, and even enhances your mood – all without side effects.

👉 Tip: After your bath, rest for 10 minutes – ideally wrapped in a warm blanket with a view of the mountains – to noticeably prolong the relaxing effects.

Today, those who stroll through Olang encounter well-kept farms, modern hotels, and a village that strikes a balance between tradition and modernity. But just a few decades ago, Olang was a purely agricultural village – marked by hard manual labor and little tourism.

At the end of the 19th century, Olang was connected to the railway network with the construction of the Puster Valley Railway in 1871 – a crucial development that first brought travelers and later holidaymakers into the valley. Shortly after, around 1900, the first health resorts such as Bergfall emerged, making Olang an early wellness destination.

In the 1960s, the first cable car on Kronplatz was built (1966), and in the 1970s, Olang gained international attention by hosting luge World and European Championships. Since then, Olang has evolved into a modern holiday destination – with roots deeply embedded in South Tyrolean history.

And if you look closely, you’ll still find traces of the past: the old stone steps at the farmhouses, the hay carts in summer, and the heartfelt smiles that remain unchanged.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that bring the most joy: a soft dough, a sun-ripened apricot, a hint of cinnamon – and you have a dish that captures the essence of summer and indulgence. Apricot dumplings are a sweet classic of Alpine cuisine, bringing lightness to the plate – whether served as a dessert or as a main course on a relaxed day.
 

Apricot dumplings with curd cheese dough
Makes approx. 8 dumplings
 

For the dough:
     - 250 g curd cheese, well drained
     - 60 g soft butter
     - 1 egg
     - 1 pinch of salt
     - 100 g flour (all-purpose or pastry flour)
     - 50 g fine semolina

For the filling:
     - 8 small, ripe apricots
     - 8 sugar cubes or small pieces of marzipan

For the coating:
     - 80 g butter
     - 100 g breadcrumbs
     - 2 tablespoons sugar
     - 1 teaspoon cinnamon
 

Instructions

1. Prepare the dough: Mix butter, curd cheese, egg, salt, flour, and semolina into a smooth dough. Chill for 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the apricots: Carefully remove the pits and fill each apricot with a sugar cube or a small piece of marzipan.
3. Form the dumplings: Divide the dough into portions, flatten each one, wrap around an apricot, and shape into dumplings.
4. Cook: Gently boil the dumplings in lightly salted water for about 10–12 minutes until they rise to the surface.
5. Make the coating: Melt the butter in a pan, add breadcrumbs, sugar, and cinnamon, and toast until golden brown. Roll the cooked dumplings in the crumb mixture and serve.

Once a year, the mountains surrounding Olang are bathed in a very special light: On an early summer evening, usually in June, large fires begin to flicker on the peaks after nightfall – a spectacle that captivates both locals and visitors alike.

These traditional mountain fires are among the most impressive customs of the region. They symbolize unity, community, and a deep connection to old values. The flames are often lit by families or local clubs, who hike up hours in advance, prepare the firewood, and secure their spot on the mountain.

These aren’t just simple bonfires: many groups create glowing symbols – such as hearts, the year’s numbers, or circles – that can be seen clearly from the valley. Depending on the weather, the fires can shine far across the land – and sometimes several mountainsides light up all at once.

The moment you step into the forest behind the Hubertus, you’re embraced by a distinctive scent – a blend of fresh earth, resin, pine needles, and moss. What many simply describe as “that amazing forest smell” actually has a much deeper effect: it’s caused by so-called terpenes, natural messenger substances released into the air by trees – especially conifers.

These terpenes are what help us relax during forest bathing, lift our mood, and can even strengthen our immune system.

• Larch is considered beneficial for the respiratory system

Christmas Eve in the mountains is a unique experience filled with peace and reflection. While snowflakes silently fall outside, the evening begins for many with preparations for the festive Christmas service. Chapels and churches, beautifully decorated, glow with the warm light of candles, creating an atmosphere that touches the heart.

Back home or gathered with friends and family, the highlight of the evening is the Christmas dinner. Traditional regional dishes, often simple yet full of flavor, reflect the values of gratitude and togetherness.

After the meal, the nativity scene is completed with the figure of the Christ Child, and the exchange of gifts brings joy and wonder, especially to the little ones. In many families, Christmas carols are sung or stories are shared, as the scent of pine branches and candles fills the room.

"Cooking is like a journey through taste and tradition," says Chef Antonio. He invites us into the aromatic world of his kitchen where local ingredients are not just cooked, but celebrated, revealing how a deep connection with food elevates every dish he crafts.

Serves: 4 | Time: 2.5 – 3 hours

INGREDIENTS

800 g beef cheek
100 g tomato
100 g onion
80 g carrot
60 g celery (stalk)
30 g tomato paste
½ l red wine
½ l port
½ l beef stock or water
1 clove garlic
2 juniper berries (crushed)
4 slices dried mushroom
1 sprig thyme
1 sprig rosemary
1 sage leaf
½ bay leaf
1 tbsp. cold butter
4 tbsp. oil
Salt and pepper

Season the beef cheeks with salt and pepper and sear them in hot oil in a deep pan on all sides. Then remove the meat from the pan. In the same oil, sauté the onions, carrots, and celery until lightly browned. Add the tomatoes and tomato paste and sauté briefly. Deglaze with red wine and port, scraping the cooking residues from the bottom of the pan.

Return the meat to the pan and let the liquid reduce almost completely. Then add the beef broth (or water). Add juniper berries, thyme, rosemary, sage, bay leaves, garlic, and dried mushrooms. Cover the pan and let it stew in the oven at 160-180 degrees Celsius for 2.5 to 3 hours, turning occasionally.

Strain the sauce through a sieve, bring to a boil, and reduce for 10 minutes until it reaches the desired consistency. Finish with cold butter and adjust seasoning. Slice the braised beef cheeks, serve with the sauce, and garnish with fresh herbs.

Sustainability is a philosophy we live by, which is reflected in our use of natural resources. A central element of our environmental strategy is the management of our wood chip plant, which plays a key role in our energy supply. The wood chips are obtained from damaged wood that is carefully collected from the surrounding area. This process not only allows us to utilise energy from renewable sources, but also helps to keep the forests healthy by removing damaged and diseased trees.

To close the cycle of sustainability, we make investments in reforestation projects within the municipal area. Trees that are used for energy generation are replaced by new ones, thereby maintaining the natural balance of flora and fauna. These reforestation initiatives are an essential part of our efforts to minimise the ecological footprint of our hotel and preserve nature for future generations.

A bike tour from Olang to Lake Braies is a real highlight for nature lovers and cycling enthusiasts. The route leads through the picturesque landscape of the Dolomites and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

The route is about 20 kilometres long and requires a medium level of fitness, as it also includes some ascents. There are numerous opportunities to take a break and enjoy nature along the way. The section beside the river is particularly attractive, where the babbling of the water provides a calming backdrop.

Lake Braies itself, often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Dolomites’, is the crowning glory of the tour. This lake is famous for its intense turquoise-coloured water and the dramatic mountain backdrop reflected in the clear water. Once you reach your destination, you can relax on the lakeside, hike around the lake or stop off at one of the local restaurants to enjoy traditional South Tyrolean dishes.

In summer, we recommend starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds as much as possible.
